As scheduled the Commemoration of 66th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the World Human Rights Day was observed on 10th December, 2014 at 3.30 p.m. at Sisir Mancha, Kolkata. His Excellency, Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal and Shri Biman Banerjee, Hon’ble Speaker, West Bengal Legislative Assembly were present as Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively. The programme continued upto 4.30 p.m.
Shri M.S. Dwivedy, Hon’ble Member, WBHRC welcomed the Hon’ble dignitaries and enlightened in his brief speech the aims and objectives of the Commission and the way how it is functioning.
Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, the Hon’ble Governor in his Inaugural and Key-note address highlighted basic rights of every human being which are enshrined in the constitution in the form of fundamental rights and the Commission shall be duty-bound to protect those rights especially for women and children who are vulnerable in the society. The Hon’ble Governor praised in his speech that the Commission is well responsive to any complaint from the women in particular. He is also in favour of a permanent Chairperson of the Commission.
Shri Biman Banerjee, the Hon’ble Speaker in his speech stressed the necessity of undertaking publicity and awareness campaign even at the rural level so that the people may get well aware of any violation of their rights and can approach the Human Rights Commission for its redressal. 
Shri Naparajit Mukherjee, Hon’ble Acting Chairperson of the Commission in his speech elaborated about the activities of the Commission and, informs that, the Commission plays the role of a catalyst in protecting the rights of the people. He also referred to a number of awareness programmes which were held both at the State and district level. He also supported the view of the Hon’ble Speaker and agreed to the point that those campaigns may be percolated down to the sub-divisional and block-level in the near future.
Shri Laima Chozah, Secretary & CEO of the Commission thanked the Hon’ble dignitaries present in the programme and also thanked those officials, staff, print & electronic media, Sisir Mancha and I&CA authorities and also concerned agencies for contributing to the successful organization of the programme.
